Jerry Jones hopes to have 'everyone under contract' soon

While some reports have indicated Dallas could be nearing an agreement with Ezekiel Elliott, Jerry Jones admitted there’s no real sign of progress as the running back’s holdout hits 30 days on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after the team’s 34-0 preseason win at Houston, the Cowboys owner was asked if a sense of urgency is settling in as the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Giants approaches.

“Again, I don’t want to sound like it’s not important for him to be here. I think it is important for him to be here or we wouldn’t be having everybody be here, everybody getting some work in,” Jones said, via ESPN. “Everything about this is important. Everybody does understand it. It’s just a question of seeing if it works. But you know, we’re going to play football one way or the other. That’s the way it works.”

It was rumored the Cowboys offered to make Elliott the second highest-paid running back in the NFL in a deal that would net him a contract that isn’t as big as Todd Gurley’s four-year, $57.5 million extension signed in July 2018, but is worth more than Le’Veon Bell’s four-year, $52.5 million deal he inked with the Jets this offseason.

But the team has to consider the money due to quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper, as well.

“In terms of off the field, what you want is everybody under contract, and everybody is under contract that makes the squad, lining up against the Giants. That is the goal,” Jones said. “It’s a very tangible thing. Everybody under contract playing. When you don’t have everybody under contract playing, then you’re dealing with a blowout or you’re dealing with a flat tire someplace and you try to get it fixed. But you’ve got to play, and you do play.”

As for when the negotiations could be finalized, it’s anybody’s guess.

“It could drag on or it could happen quickly,” Jones said on the pregame show “The Fan” KRLD-FM (105.3), per the Dallas Morning News.
