Redskins to make QB decisions after third preseason game, Jay Gruden says

The quarterback carousel will continue to spin in Washington for at least another week.

According to The MMQB, Redskins coach Jay Gruden intends to make his starting quarterback decision after the team’s third preseason game, which is scheduled for Aug. 22 in Atlanta.

Gruden added that No. 15 overall pick Dwayne Haskins is still chasing Colt McCoy and Case Keenum, but the rookie still has time to catch the veterans before the regular-season opener Sept. 8 against the Eagles.

“I think it’ll come probably sooner than later, because you’d like to get that guy ready to go,” Gruden told The MMQB. “I’d like to hopefully make that decision after the third preseason game, so we can get two weeks to get ready for Philadelphia with the starter.”

The Redskins gave an indication of who could be their starting quarterback, as McCoy was the starter in the team’s first depth chart of training camp, with Keenum and Haskins at second- and third-string, respectively. Keenum then started the first preseason game.

“I’d say the vets probably have a little bit of a leg up on him, just because they’re vets and they’ve played,” Gruden said. “Case has played a lot of football, of course he’s new to the system. Colt’s an experienced guy in the system, he’s coming off that injury, we just have to see how he is running around. He got a little nicked today on it, from a confidence standpoint, from a stability standpoint.

“But they have a little bit of a leg up on [Haskins], just because of their knowledge of third down and red zone concepts. There’s a lot Dwayne still has to learn, but he can get there.”

The Redskins relied on Alex Smith last season until he suffered a horrifying leg injury in November that will sideline him in 2019 as well. McCoy stepped in, only to suffer a broken leg a couple weeks later.
