The Trailer For Ryan Murphy's 'The Politician' Takes Pettiness to a Whole New Level

In the world of Ryan Murphy, high school has always been high stakes. The first trailer for the Glee creator’s upcoming project The Politician is here, and it’s seemingly the love child of Election and Booksmart.

The show follows the ambitious Payton Hobart, masquerading as Tracy Flick reincarnated. He’s got his singularly-focused sights set on Harvard and, eventually, the title of POTUS. But first he’s got to clinch student body President at the cutthroat Saint Sebastian High School. Murphy mainstays on the campaign trail include Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Lange, while newcomers Zoey Deutch and Lucy Boynton threaten political suicide.

“You don’t have to be a good person as long as you do good things,” a potentially dangerous love interest tells Payton. However, a first look at The Politician doesn’t showcase a lot of traditionally “good” people or ethical deeds. For instance, when a character asks Lange if he should kill someone, she replies, “Yes, yes I do.” Murphy is offering a world in which politics gets petty. Full of voter fraud, blackmail, and behind-the-scenes lobbying, this comedy is less parody than it is precisely accurate.

Landing on Netflix on September 27, it’s the first major project to spring from Murphy’s lucrative deal with the streaming company. It was previously announced as an anthology series, suggesting a new politically-driven plot each season. Political scandals are sort of Murphy’s thing as of late. His other recently announced project? An American Crime Story installment centered on the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal.
